Cult classic Audition will soon be terrorising western audiences

The executive producer behind Basic Instinct (1992) and The Terminator (1984) Mario Kassar has joined forces with Australian director Richard Gray (Mine Games 2012) to remake the infamous Asian torture film, Audition, in an American setting.

The story acts as a cautionary tale when it comes to the world of dating. A widower seeking a new relationship pursues a woman who isn’t as she seems, and hides a disturbing and obsessive past.

It has been a popular tradition for Japanese horrors to receive a Western re-imagining, such as The Ring (2002), The Grudge (2004), Dark Water (2005) and The Eye (2008). Takashi Miike’s Audition (1999) is the (next shocking) film to get be remade in the English language. However, Slash Film advise Gray (who is also writing the screenplay) will be basing the script on the novel by Ryu Murakami, of which the original film is adapted from, as opposed to a direct copy of Miike’s film.

Fans may be wondering how the psychologically twisted scenes will be treated, including the horrific climax and if the filmmakers will take it even “kiri, kiri” (“deeper, deeper”).
